Are Cwtch Skincare products entirely free from synthetic preservatives?
Yes. All the ingredients used in Cwtch Skincare are 100% natural, including our anti-microbial system. In all skincare it is very important to have a preservation system in place to prevent the growth of harmful microbes; but rather than use synthetic preservatives such as phenoxyethanol, or hormone disrupting parabens, we use anti-microbial peptides harvested from the fermentation of foods – such as sauerkraut, coconut or lactobacillus – to prevent the growth of unwanted microbes. We also use Elderberry extract, an oil soluble anti-microbial rich in tannins that not only protects Cwtch Skincare from unwanted microorganisms but has a positive skin benefit in that it helps to tighten the skin.
How do Cwtch Skincare products stay fresh/safe for use without preservatives?
Thanks to our low use of water and natural, broad-spectrum anti-microbial peptides…Read More
Microbes only grow in water, and so we have designed our premium skincare using the minimum amount of water. Where our products do contain water or fresh Aloe Vera gel we add a range of 100% natural, broad-spectrum anti-microbial peptides harvested from the fermentation of foods – such as sauerkraut, coconut or lactobacillus – to prevent the growth of unwanted microbes. We also use Elderberry extract, an oil soluble anti-microbial rich in tannins, to protect against unwanted microorganisms.

Why do my SWS Mother & Baby Healing and Moisturising Balm and CARIAD Bump, Breast and Body Mask liquefy in warmer temperatures?
It’s all down to the natural tropical oils! Read More
SWS and CARIAD contain a high percentage of superbly moisturising and healing tropical oils that naturally liquefy when warm. Some modern moisturisers change these liquid oils into solid oils by altering their chemistry using a process known as hydrogenation. Unfortunately hydrogenated oils (or trans fats) also negatively affect the function of skin cells; as such, we don’t use them in our skincare, and instead recommend simply that you keep our products cool to prevent them from melting and to keep them as fresh as possible. They are so pure it is a good idea to think of them as food for the skin, and treat them like food by refrigerating them too!
It is fine to use these products in their liquefied state as it doesn’t affect their efficacy – just be careful when opening to avoid spilling; they will set again once cooled/refrigerated.
I am looking for an organic certification on your site but can’t find one. Why is that?
It’s largely to do with the suppliers we choose to support….Read More
While all our ingredients are organic (grown and produced using sustainable, chemical-free agricultural practices) a few of our suppliers cannot afford to undertake the expensive lengthy process to obtain official certification. This doesn’t mean, however, that they don’t employ the highest levels of ethical and organic practices to produce truly exceptional ingredients.
I have been advised not to use essential oils during pregnancy. Is it safe to use the essential oils in your pregnancy products?
Yes. We only use essential oils deemed safe during pregnancy such as Sandalwood and Vanilla, which are free from allergens.
I have a nut allergy. Do any of your products contain nut oils and should I avoid them if so?
We do not use any nut oils in Cwtch Skincare. Read More
We do not use any nut oils in Cwtch Skincare.
Most people with nut allergies react to the oil from more common nuts including almonds, hazelnuts and peanuts (a legume). It is a lot less common to react to the oils of palm fruits like Coconut and Babassu or seed oils like Jojoba, Marula and Plum.
If you do have a nut allergy we would always recommend that you are cautious when trying a new product. Carefully read the ingredients label first. Depending on the severity of your reaction, you may want to test products in the presence of a medical professional. Otherwise trial the product by patch testing for 3-5 days before more general application. If any sensitivity occurs discontinue use immediately.
Are Cwtch Skincare products suitable for use from birth?
Yes – but we recommend you follow the advice of your healthcare professional… Read More
Cwtch Skincare products are the safest around, formulated with only the purest natural ingredients. In keeping with the advice of the majority of health care advisers, however, we recommend minimising exposure to anything but warm water for the first month after birth. After the first month it is safe to use all Cwtch Skincare products.
Are Cwtch Skincare products suitable for babies (and mums) with eczema-prone skin?
Absolutely. The raw plant oils that we use in Cwtch Skincare are a wonderful source of essential fatty acids, essential for the healthy function of your skin. Babassu oil and Coconut oil contain medium-chain fatty acids (Lauric Acid, Caprylic Acid and Capric Acid) that confer protection to the skin by boosting the immunity and protecting against invasion by a broad range of pathogens. MCFAs are also found in breast milk, where they are the leading ingredient that defends newborns from infections for the first few months of their lives, while their immune systems are still evolving. Traditionally these oils have been found to help relieve inflammation, itching and dryness of skin.

Your safety and comfort is paramount.

We use only the highest quality, organically produced, cold pressed oils and fresh Aloe Vera Gel to blend the most nourishing skincare available, using more than one active ingredient in each product. As we do not dilute the activity of our ingredients with water you will find that our products are concentrated, and you only need use a very small amount for a potent effect. In this way they represent very good value as a little really does go a long way.
Are Cwtch Skincare products ‘pH balanced’?
Yes, SWS and NOS DA are pH 5 and pH 6, so are perfectly balanced for your baby’s skin and beneficial in properly maintaining the acid mantle of delicate skin. The other four Cwtch products are oil based and have no water, so no pH, however all are created using oils that work particularly well with the skin’s natural oil secretions and the acid mantle and its natural ability to protect the skin.

SWS AND NOS DA contain fresh Aloe Vera Gel and have a shelf life of 1 year – 2 months once opened. These need to be kept refrigerated to keep them fresh.
Cwtch Skincare is preservative free. We protect our products from microbial growth by using natural anti-microbial ingredients, such as Elderberry extract and fermented Lactobacillus. These safe ingredients work gently and harmoniously with skin, but are not as strong as parabens and other synthetic preservatives. That is why it is important to consider our fresh skincare to be more like food than conventional cosmetics.

Do Cwtch Skincare products contain any perfumes or fragrances?
We only use 100% natural fragrances derived from Vanilla, Plum and Cucumber called Phytoscents. They do not contain any natural allergens, and so are perfect for babies and people with sensitive skin. We also use essential oils of Lavender and Sandalwood, steam distilled and of very high quality. We do not use synthetic fragrances, many of which are derived from petrochemical sources and can cause sensitivities in some people.
I see that you use ‘raw’ and ‘live’ ingredients – are these safe for babies?
Yes – and yes! Read More
Yes – and yes! ‘Raw’ and ‘live’ ingredients refer to pure, plant-based ingredients that have not been heated to temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius (to ensure and protect their healing and protective compounds). And as our ingredients are derived from edible plants we are happy that they are safe for use throughout pregnancy and for the protection of your baby’s skin. We do recommend that you follow the advice of your healthcare practitioner and do not use any products for the first month of life. This is to ensure your baby’s immune system and blood brain barrier has the necessary time to develop before being exposed to new substances. All baby needs for the first month is to be gently washed in warm water.
Is Cwtch Skincare packaging recyclable?
Yes. We use fully recyclable Miron Violet Glass to protect our delicate products from UV light, and to aid naturally in the preservation of the contents.
